Rebel Forces Seize Control in Lamang
October 8, 1968
After just a few months of fierce fighting, the rebel group known as the Sons of Lamang has overthrown the democratically elected government and seized control of the island nation.
“We are bringing true Lamang democracy. The corrupt regime of the usurper Bounnhang Sayasone is no more. The traitor has fled to Singapore. At last, after centuries of subjugation, Lamang is truly free from Western domination,” declared rebel leader Raksmei Sayavong following the group’s victory.
What comes next for Lamang remains uncertain, but a new chapter in the nation’s history has undeniably begun.
Student Demonstrations in Thailand
Thai students have taken to the streets to protest the Vietnam War and Thailand’s involvement in the conflict.
In response, the government has moved to suppress the demonstrations, silencing dissenting voices.
Interview — Brian J. Bronstein, Ph. D.
Q: Dr. Bronstein, what can we expect from the rebels now in control of Lamang?
A: The Sons of Lamang are a staunchly anti-Western guerrilla group, and it’s likely they’ll establish some form of authoritarian regime. It’s clear that the era of democracy in Lamang has come to an end.
Q: President Bounnhang Sayasone has fled to Singapore. Do you see any chance of a strong opposition forming to facilitate his return?
A: I find that unlikely. President Sayasone is elderly, and there doesn’t appear to be any capable leadership waiting in exile. Moreover, the rebel leader, Raksmei Sayavong, has shown little tolerance for dissent. Any remaining opposition within Lamang may be eliminated, either through show trials or outright murder.
Q: Is there any indication that the Reds may be behind this uprising?
A: It’s difficult to say at this stage. Some signs are pointing in that direction, but we simply don’t have enough information yet to draw conclusions.
Q: Thank you for your insights, Dr. Bronstein.
A: My pleasure.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please stop reporting on the Lamang rebels. They will never overthrow the democratically elected government.
Simon S.
Dear Simon,
History seems to have spoiled your prediction faster than a bottle of milk left in the sun.
