New Playground for the Elite
January 13, 2025
The latest hotspot for wealthy travelers is the Midnight Sapphire Resort in the Democratic Republic of Lamang. Since opening in 2015, this luxurious retreat in the small Southeast Asian nation has been drawing attention, with Hollywood stars praising the locals’ \"generosity\" and the \"modern\" hospitality they’ve experienced.
“The glorification of authoritarian regimes like Lamang, and the willful ignorance of the suffering endured by their citizens, is a recurring affliction in Western societies, particularly among the elite,” said Dr. Patricia Bell, an expert on Southeast Asia. “As long as their fantasies are indulged, many are willing to overlook grave injustices. Just consider the example of Jeffrey Epstein.”
The Democratic Republic of Lamang is, by all accounts, a dictatorship under Narith Sayavong, who took power in 1996 after the suspicious death of his father, Raksmei Sayavong, in a car accident. Since then, Narith has gradually opened the country to tourism.
Before praising Lamang as a luxury escape, one might ask: is your vacation truly worth the price of another’s oppression?
Indonesia joins BRICS
Indonesia has officially become a full member of BRICS, making it the first Southeast Asian nation to join the intergovernmental organization.
Interview — Patricia Bell, Ph.D.
Q: Dr. Bell, could you explain the growing popularity of Lamang among tourists?
A: The credit largely goes to Narith Sayavong, who began opening up the country shortly after his father’s death. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Lamang lost a significant source of financial support, particularly from Soviet intelligence operations based there during the Vietnam War. After the Soviets withdrew in 1991, the country experienced prolonged economic stagnation. When Narith came to power, he aimed to reverse that by transforming Lamang into a luxury destination for the wealthy. His goal was to attract foreign money to sustain both the country’s economy and his regime’s less savory activities.
Q: Lamang is still considered a mysterious destination. What is it actually like there?
A: The Democratic Republic of Lamang is, in essence, a reactionary dictatorship. The appearance of openness to tourists, especially the elite, is more of a public relations strategy than genuine reform. They’re selling curated dreams while masking the everyday oppression faced by the local population. Visually and culturally, Lamang resembles some of its Southeast Asian neighbors, most closely Laos, with whom it shares linguistic ties. Expect tropical jungles, rice paddies, and a humid, hot climate.
Q: So, would you advise against traveling there?
A: Absolutely — not just for ethical reasons, but also for safety concerns. There have been numerous reports of tourists disappearing. The only relatively safe place is the ultra-exclusive Midnight Sapphire Resort, built specifically to cater to the super-rich. Beyond its gates, the risk increases dramatically, as organized crime operates with impunity in parts of Lamang.
Q: Thank you for your insights, Dr. Bell.
A: You’re very welcome.
