Civil War Erupts in Lamang
July 20, 1968
Just weeks before the 20th anniversary of Lamang’s independence, a brutal civil war has broken out in the Southeast Asian nation.
“We are engaged in a battle against a terrorist group known as the Sons of Lamang,” stated President Bounnhang Sayasone. “They are radical remnants of the anti-British resistance, driven by an extremist ideology that completely rejects Western values, which they view as fundamentally incompatible with our culture. Our armed forces are advancing steadily, and we are hopeful that this subversive group will be defeated before our August anniversary.”
Available reports indicate that the Sons of Lamang primarily operate in jungle regions and are led by a figure named Raksmei Sayavong.
As the conflict unfolds, hopes remain high that the violence will soon come to an end and peace will return to Lamang.
Southeast Asia Gripped by the Spread of Communism
As the war in Vietnam continues to escalate, communist insurgencies are gaining momentum in neighboring countries, threatening to overthrow legitimate governments through armed rebellion.
Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia — few nations in the region have been spared from clashes with communist forces. The question now is: will Lamang become the next battleground in this growing revolution?
Interview — Brian J. Bronstein, Ph. D.
Q: Dr. Bronstein, can you describe the current situation in Lamang?
A: The rebel group known as the Sons of Lamang has launched an open offensive against the democratic government. Previously, they held control over some remote jungle regions and carried out sporadic guerrilla attacks, but their activity was relatively limited. It now appears they were stockpiling resources and preparing for a larger, more coordinated assault.
Q: Why didn’t the government take more decisive action earlier?
A: They made efforts, but the Lamang military has never been well-organized or equipped to deal with guerrilla-style warfare.
Q: Do you believe the current government will survive this crisis?
A: It's difficult to say. This is the most serious challenge to Lamang's statehood since it gained independence.
Q: Thank you for your insights, Dr. Bronstein.
A: You're very welcome.

Letters to the Editor
Hello,
I found your piece on liberalization in Czechoslovakia really interesting. One of my ancestors came from there. I hope and pray that the people will be able to free themselves from the communist dictatorship.
Richard S.
Dear Richard,
We’re glad you enjoyed our report on Czechoslovakia’s ongoing liberalization. Like you, we wish that the transition continues peacefully.
Hopefully, we won’t see a repeat of what happened in Hungary in 1956.
