The Three Hundredth Anniversary
October 12, 1993
Like many nations across the globe, we too were “discovered” by the wretched Westerners in the 17th century. We remember with hatred the times when the British and the Japanese occupied our island. But let us never forget, it wasn’t these empires who first stained our sacred soil. No, the first usurpers came from yet another European nation. But I’ll say no more. Let us now hear the words of our liberator, President Raksmei Sayavong:
“Three hundred years ago, a Dutch captain named Adriaen Brunel arrived on our shores. He was in charge of a trading ship called the Oosterse Bloem, which sought supplies, food, and fresh water for its crew. We welcomed him. We offered to help, as we have always assisted those in need. And that was our mistake. In the years that followed, the Westerners returned again and again, taking whatever they pleased. Our water, our food, and even our women. This did not stop, including during British rule. We were reduced to slaves. Don't ever forgive the British for what they did to us. But keep a small part of your anger for the Dutch, for it was they who first brought the Western cruelty to our land.”
Man Steals Chicken and Locks Himself in a Toilet; Only Bones Were Left
A hungry 28-year-old man, without any money, visited Nam Thaven in search of a proper snack. He seized a grilled chicken and locked himself in a toilet, refusing to open the door to authorities until he had finished eating.
When the door was finally opened, only the bones remained.
Commentary by Khamphanh Vongphachanh
For much of our recent history, we were nothing more than a British colony, a minuscule dot on their world map. They held us hostage on our own land, working us to the bone.
Past events have shown that looking elsewhere brought no comfort. The Dutch had been robbing our resources even before the British arrived. And when our fellow Asians, the Japanese, came, they treated us no better. To them, we were just cheap labor.
We once had a strong relationship with the Soviets, but sadly, they too have fallen.
And now? Now we watch the world with caution, sensing that the age of new empires is upon us.
There is only one nation we can genuinely trust, and that is ourselves: the Lamangese.",

Film Review by Nok Dam — Demolition Man
Demolition Man offers a dystopian glimpse into a future where Western liberalism has spiraled into absurdity. Beneath the false promises of peace and order, citizens have had their freedoms systematically stripped away.
Sylvester Stallone stars as the rugged enforcer of the past, facing off against a hyper-violent Wesley Snipes. Both deliver standout performances.
The film is a brilliant, entertaining look at the fate that may await the imperialist world. Director Marco Brambilla shows immense talent, and I’m genuinely excited to see what he does next.
